Squarespace to Webflow migration step by step

How it works, in short

Export your Squarespace blog as a WordPress-format XML file, convert it to CSV and import it into a Webflow Collection; rebuild pages in the Webflow Designer; re-host images; copy over page SEO settings and existing URL mappings; then 301 any changed URLs before moving DNS. Expect three to six weeks for a typical startup site.

Squarespace is a great first website. SaaS teams leave it when they need custom content types, landing pages that don't look like a template, and deeper SEO control.

Squarespace's export is limited (it exports one blog collection and basic pages in WordPress format, and skips most other content), so a move to Webflow is part export, part rebuild. The upside: your URL structure is usually simple, so redirects are straightforward.

Before you start

What moves, and what doesn't

Why teams move to Webflow

  • Custom CMS Collections for case studies, integrations and comparisons
  • Layouts that match your brand instead of a template
  • Finer control of meta, canonicals, schema and semantic HTML
  • Better integration with a SaaS marketing stack
Blog posts
Settings → Export produces a WordPress XML file for one blog collection. Convert to CSV and import.
Pages
Rebuilt in Webflow. Layout blocks don't export.
Products, events, galleries
Not included in the export. Recreate manually or via CSV.
Images
Hosted on Squarespace's CDN. Import by URL so Webflow re-hosts them.
URL mappings
Copy the existing redirect list from Squarespace's URL Mappings and re-create it in Webflow.
Forms and newsletter blocks
Rebuild with Webflow forms or CRM embeds.

Step by step

How to migrate from Squarespace to Webflow

  1. Step 1

    Audit and export

Capture the current site's URLs and SEO data, then run the Squarespace export.

    • Crawl the site and export Search Console data
    • Run Settings → Export for the blog
    • Copy existing URL Mappings into a spreadsheet
    • List blocks and integrations that won't export (forms, newsletter, scheduling)
  2. Step 2

Model the CMS and build templates

Use the migration to add the content types Squarespace couldn't support.

    • Create a Posts Collection with the same base path as your Squarespace blog
    • Add Collections for case studies, integrations or customers
    • Build the design system, components and templates
  3. Step 3

    Import content

Convert the XML export to CSV, import, and check formatting.

    • Convert the XML to CSV with title, slug, body, date, image and SEO columns
    • Import with image URLs so assets are re-hosted
    • Fix internal links and embedded blocks in post bodies
  4. Step 4

    Redirect and launch

Bring over old URL mappings and add new redirects for anything that changed.

    • Recreate previous URL Mappings as Webflow 301s
    • Add redirects for changed page and blog paths
    • Move DNS, verify SSL, submit the sitemap and monitor

SEO preservation

Keep your rankings: map every URL

Most traffic lost in a migration comes from URLs that change without a 301 redirect. These are the Squarespace URL patterns we see most often and where they should go on Webflow.

Example URL redirect map
Old Squarespace URLNew Webflow URLNote
/blog/onboarding-emails/blog/onboarding-emailsKeep the same Collection slug and no redirect is needed.
/blog?category=Product/blog-categories/productSquarespace category filters use query strings; redirect any that earned links.
/s/pricing-guide.pdf/resources/pricing-guideFiles uploaded to Squarespace live under /s/ and often have backlinks.
/new-page-2/featuresFix default slugs while you're here.

Squarespace → Webflow SEO checklist

  • Copy Squarespace URL Mappings (old redirects) into Webflow so prior redirects keep working
  • Keep the blog's base path identical to avoid redirecting every post
  • Redirect /s/ file URLs that have backlinks
  • Move page-level SEO titles and descriptions from each page's settings
  • Re-host images from Squarespace's CDN before canceling
  • Re-verify the domain in Search Console and submit the sitemap

Typical timeline

  1. Audit and exportWeek 1
    Crawl, export, URL mapping inventory.
  2. Design and buildWeeks 2–4
Design system, Collections, templates and pages.
  3. Content importWeeks 3–5
    XML to CSV, import, clean-up.
  4. LaunchWeeks 5–6
    Redirects, DNS, QA, monitoring.

Timelines assume a typical SaaS marketing site and quick feedback. Large archives and heavy redesigns take longer.

Risks

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Only one blog collection exports

Export each blog separately by temporarily switching collections, or copy remaining content manually.

Old URL mappings forgotten

Copy the URL Mappings panel verbatim before cancelling Squarespace.

Images disappear when the subscription ends

Re-host every asset and search post bodies for Squarespace CDN URLs.
